Marvel of American engineering and ingenuity, the C&O Canal and towpath is a historic National Park, a natural paradise, and a 184.5 mile biking/hiking trail along the Potomac river. The trail connects in Cumberland to the 150 mile-long Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) rail-to-trail to create one of the longest continuous biking routes in the US, traveling from Washington DC to Pittsburg PA, and crossing the Mason-Dixon Line.

This is a very interesting area of the C&O Canal where the canal actually disappears because of the rock wall. All the boats had to be moved into the Potomac “Slackwater” created by the Dam 4, and then back onto the canal by a system of locks. All this is early American ingenuity is nicely explained by plaques along the way. Current activities include: biking, hiking, boating, fishing, paddling, swimming.

Our historic house is located in the Taylors Landing neighborhood, a site that gets its name from a store supplying the operation of the C&O Canal, offers a peaceful rural setting including working farms. Nowadays, Taylors Landing also offers a boat ramp on the Potomac River.

Taylors Landing used to be a place where canal boats stopped to stock up on supplies at C&O Canal mercantile (original building was renovated). Nowadays people visit the boat landing on the Potomac for paddling, fishing, or swimming, and the towpath for walking, running, or biking. Some well known races pass by here, including the JFK50.
